Geographic Information Systems (GIS)
Compass Interactive Maps
What is GIS?
A Geographic Information System (GIS) captures, stores, analyzes, manages, and presents data that is linked to a location. A map is a common product of GIS, but the strength of GIS is performing spatial data analysis. Data is described in terms of geographic features, meaning points can represent schools or parks, lines can represent streets or canals, and polygons can represent parcels or water bodies. These features have attributes, which are data records. For example, the streets feature would show you where the roads go, but the streets data would show you the road name, the speed limits, or road jurisdiction.Who is GIS?
