Many times there are reasons your water bill may be higher than usual. For instance:
- Recent House Guests
- Filling your Swimming Pool
- Increased Outdoor Irrigation
However, if your water bill is much higher than usual for no apparent reason, you may have a leak. Finding and fixing leaks can be easy and inexpensive. Here's how:
- Locate your water meter.
- Turn off all water - inside and outside your home.
- Read your meter and write down the figures. The City of Palm Bay uses two types of water meters - a standard water meter and a radio frequency water meter.
- Wait 15 to 20 minutes and read it again.
- If the figures on your water meter have changed, there is a leak somewhere. Your next step is to find the source of the leak.
CHECK YOUR TOILETS FIRST
Toilets are the most common source of leaks inside the home. You can conduct a simple test to determine if your toilet is leaking:
- Put a few drops of food coloring or a dye tablet in the toilet tank.
- Wait 15 minutes.
- If colored water appears in the bowl, you have a leak.
- Your flush valve ball or toilet flapper may need to be repaired or replaced.

If your meter indicates a leak and you cannot find it, or if you are hesitant about tackling any repairs, call a licensed and insured plumber.
