Turkey Creek Sanctuary Update

Post Date:12/22/2017 10:24 AM

The Turkey Creek Sanctuary, located at 1502 Port Malabar Blvd. in Palm Bay, suffered severe damage due to hurricanes Matthew (2016) and Irma (2017).  Approximately 500 mature sand pines were toppled during the storms and at least 150 more were killed by the Ips Engraver Beetle, a native insect that infects pine trees that have been weakened by storm events and disease.  In addition, the park boardwalk suffered severe structural damage from the severe flooding and high winds associated with Hurricane Irma.

Work crews are working hard to remove debris and open trails and sections of the boardwalk as soon as possible.   Most repairs and clean-up activities are anticipated to be completed by June 1st, 2018.  During this time, visitors are asked to please observe signs and stay out of closed areas.  The safety of park visitors and work crew members is a high priority.

For more information or updates on the clean-up progress, call the Margaret Hames Nature Center at (321) 676-6690 or visit
