APWA Accreditation Program

The City of Palm Bay Public Works Department has committed itself to achieving accreditation through the American Public Works Association’s (APWA) accreditation program.  Consisting of over 500 best-management practices, the program aims to provide the public with better-managed agencies by giving public works departments a framework for strategic planning, better insight into how services are provided, the impetus for positive change, and training for supervisors and employees.

The Public Works Department’s initiative kicked-off in 2004, when Director James Proce ordered a detailed self-evaluation of the existing policies, procedures and practices, to gauge their operational strength against those recommended by the APWA’s “Public Works Management Practices Manual”.Following this initial self-evaluation, staff was later instructed to form a task-force committee and begin an improvement phase designed to address the department’s unmet needs.

When the improvement phase is complete, the Public Works Department will be eligible for an onsite evaluation by APWA-selected public works leaders from across the country.  To date, only 45 public works agencies in North America have met the APWA’s rigorous requirements and earned this designation.
