Functions of Maintenance and Construction
- Canal Maintenance
- Road Repair
- Pothole Repair
- Swale Trenching
Canal maintenance consists of erosion control, repair or replacement of drainage pipes, and mowing/clearing of lot line ditches and drainage rights-of-way. Canals are on a mowing schedule of twice per year for the areas that can be reached with a mowing tractor. The bottoms of the canals are sprayed with herbicide as needed to keep the flow lines free of vegetation. As the need arises, the bottoms of the canals are dredged to help keep the flow of water at the right grade.
Pothole repairs are scheduled by unit and on a complaint basis. Potholes on collector roads, such as Emerson Drive, Jupiter Blvd. and San Filippo Drive are handled on a priority basis.
A properly functioning swale should not hold water for more than 72 hours after rainfall has ceased. The most cost-effective way the City has found to maintain the swales is a process called "trenching." Rotary trencher equipment cuts a shallow, narrow groove in the swale area, establishing the flow line and removing obstructions. Unfortunately, this process also leaves behind the excess dirt from the swale. The City asks our citizens to partner with us to get the most from our limited resources. Consequently, the City’s policy is that the adjacent property owner/resident is responsible to remove or rake the excess dirt to keep it from washing back into the swale.
The Public Works Department constructs, maintains, and repairs sidewalks, curbs, and gutters along city streets. Once installed, these right-of-ways become the joint responsibility of the city and the property owner on whose property the sidewalk crosses. Property owners are responsible for regular maintenance of sidewalks, curbs, and gutters, such as sweeping and removal of debris and trash. The Public Works Department handles cracks and hole repairs of sidewalks as needed or at the request of citizens.
