SOAR unit

The PPC (powered parachute) currently
being utilized by the S.O.A.R. Unit is a Powrachute Pegasus PPC, which was
provided to the Palm Bay Police Department at no cost by the National Institute
of Justice under its Law
Enforcement Aviation and Technology Program. The Pegasus is powered by a 65 horsepower
Rotax 582cc powerplant
with a 500 sq. ft. Performance Design canopy\wing. With a fuel consumption of
around 3.5 gallons/hour, the PPC can be deployed at a much lower cost than other
methods of manned aerial observation. The PPC is stored in a small trailer at
the police department eliminating hanger costs. When the aircraft is needed,
the unit is simply towed to the designated search area and deployed from an open
field, park, or parking lot. The PPC is a “fair-weather” aircraft which places
restrictions on its ability to be deployed. Flights are limited to daytime
operations and winds less than 15 MPH.
