False Alarm reduction ordinance
In August 2000, the City Council passed an alarm system ordinance to respond to the problem of excessive false alarms. The ordinance affects all business and residential monitored alarm system users. The ordinance addresses the problem through a program of permit registration, fines for excessive false alarms, and alarm awareness and education. The ordinance requires all commercial and residential monitored alarm users to obtain a permit for their alarm system.
Forms are available here online or at the following locations:
- Your Alarm Company
- Palm Bay Police Department
- Palm Bay Fire Department
- City Hall
The permit fee is $20.00. Permits are valid from October 1 to September 30 each year.
Under the ordinance, alarm users will get two “free” false alarms. After that, fines ranging from $50 to $200 will be imposed. In addition, police response to general intrusion alarms can be suspended when an alarm user reaches 6 false alarms in a permit year, or when alarm users do not pay fines or fees. Alarm users can get a single false alarm fine waived by taking the online Alarm User Awareness Class. The free class, which is available on our website, explains how alarm systems work and explains various techniques to prevent needless false alarm activations.
