City of Palm Bay News Release

Smoke testing of wastewater system begins

Posted: 05/06/08

The Utilities Department Wastewater Collections will be conducting smoke testing in the Lift Station #49 area which consists of Knecht Road, Giroux and Cimarron Circle, Michels Drive, Roc Rosa Le May Drive, Isom Lane, Hardin Lane and Sandy Lane.  The testing will begin at 8:00 a.m. Wednesday, May 7th and will conclude by 3:00 p.m. on May 8th.

The purpose of this testing is to identify locations where rainwater and groundwater enter into the system through unauthorized connections, defective cleanouts, broken pipes, and cross connections with public storm drain systems.

As part of the inspection process, a non-toxic smoke will be blown into the sewer system.  The smoke is manufactured for this purpose and creates no fire hazards.  It will leave no residue or stains, and it has no effects on plant or animal life.  The smoke is harmless, and has a distinctive, but not unpleasant odor.  As a precaution, individuals with respiratory problems may wish to move away from defective areas within the home that could potentially allow smoke to enter the home.  It is not necessary for you to be present while the testing is being conducted.

With proper plumbing ventilation, the chance of smoke entering your home/business is reduced.  However, smoke may enter your home/business if the plumbing vents are defective, traps under the sinks/tubs/toilets are dry from non-use, and/or pipes and seals are defective.  It is recommended to run water into all infrequently used drains as soon as possible prior to the smoke testing.  If smoke does enter your building, simply open several doors and windows and it should dissipate within a few minutes.

The appearance of smoke inside a home/business indicates the possibility of unpleasant potentially hazardous wastewater gases entering the structure.

Fore more information, please contact the City of Palm Bay Utilities Department during the hours of 8:30 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. at 321-952-3410 Monday-Friday excluding holidays.  Please indicate where you are calling from, and give your name, address, and telephone number.
