City of Palm Bay News Release

police department is on youTube

Posted: 04/11/08

The Public Information Office of the Palm Bay Police Department is now part of the YouTube mania that has opened the door to millions of potential viewers to learn about one of Brevard County’s largest municipal law enforcement agencies and to help solve crimes.  The Department has set up a standard channel through YouTube where vital information is posted including surveillance images of crimes caught on tape, special segments involving unsolved crimes, and features highlighting the Department’s personnel and activities.   “This is the way of the future,” said Deputy Chief Doug Muldoon who initiated the idea.  “We want to use all of the tools available to us to get our message out.”

The channel, www.youtube.com/pbpdpio currently has ten videos posted including recent surveillance images of a woman stealing a cash envelope from a local bank, and a group of masked burglars stealing cell phones from a local distributor.  With the surveillance videos is information detailing the incidents and directing people with information to contact authorities.  One of the most popular videos on the site to date involves the Department’s active shooter training.  With more than 1,100 “hits”, the 3:30 minute clip takes viewers along as officers conduct scenario training involving an active shooter at a school.  “We are using this as a means to inform people not only about our unsolved crimes, but to educate the public on the difficult nature of the job law enforcement officers are involved with,” Muldoon added.  “This literally gives us access to millions of people and it doesn’t cost a dime.”

The Public Information Office is responsible for managing the content, posting the videos, bulletins and information, and monitoring subscribers.  The videos are updated on a regular basis and anyone interested can subscribe to the channel through a free YouTube account.  Subscribers will receive notifications when new videos and information are posted.
