City of Palm Bay News Release
Proactive enforcement Targets Holiday Safety
Posted: 11/21/07
In an effort to increase safety during the Christmas shopping season, the Palm Bay Police Department will be conducting specialized enforcement in high traffic areas where people tend to be more vulnerable to becoming a victim of crime. Chief Bill Berger has authorized extra manning in order to have “high visibility” at area shopping centers, and businesses where criminals look for opportunities to steal. People are urged to lock vehicles and remove all valuables or keep them locked in the trunk and out of plain view. “Vehicle burglaries tend to increase this time of year,” Berger said. “The main reason is people leaving their vehicle doors unlocked.”
Extra patrol officers will be on duty during peak business times. Officers with the Crime Suppression Unit will be targeting random locations throughout the City conducting high-profile activity such as traffic stops, security checks at businesses and constant monitoring for any criminal activity. VCOPS will also be utilized at high traffic locations to provide assistance where needed. “We want to make this a safe and happy holiday,” Berger said. “But people also need to take responsible steps on their own to secure their property and be aware of their surroundings.”
The extra manpower will be in place through the end of the Christmas holiday season.
