City of Palm Bay News Release

Officers to teach kids halloween safety

Posted: 10/24/07

Officers with the Neighborhood Policing Unit will provide children with a safety lesson along with some fun and games in a pre-Halloween event hosted at the Palm Bay Teen Center located at the Palm Bay West Plaza on Malabar Road.  The event will be held on Tuesday, October 30th from 5-7 p.m. Officers will show children how to keep safe from strangers, what to do with Halloween candy, safe houses, increasing visibility at night, safe travel on bicycles and on foot and other important information designed to keep children safe as they celebrate. “We want every child to have fun with safety in mind,” said Officer Joann Upperman, assigned to the Neighborhood Policing Unit.

Children are urged to follow these and other safety tips:

  • Young children should always be accompanied by an adult or an older, responsible child, never alone.
  • Never enter the home of a stranger
  • Carry flash lights to be easily seen
  • For greater visibility during dusk and darkness, decorate or trim costumes with reflective tape that will glow in the beam of a car's headlights. Bags or sacks should also be light colored or decorated with reflective tape. Reflective tape is usually available in hardware, bicycle, and sporting goods stores.
  • Buy flame retardant costumes and consider using make-up rather than masks. A mask may obscure a child's vision
  • Parents should check candy before it is consumed. Anything suspicious should be discarded!

Officers will have goodie bags for the first 300 children ages 2-12 as supplies are limited.  For more information, please contact the Neighborhood Policing Unit at 321-952-3400 ext. 4678.
