Firefighters promote safety during national fire prevention week
Posted: 10/06/07
As part of an ongoing effort to educate the public in fire and life safety, Palm Bay Fire Rescue crews helped promote National Fire Prevention Week with a Home Depot Safety Day demonstration. Firefighters from Station 90 and Station 92 simulated a vehicle extrication highlighting the special tools and equipment used at the scene of a serious vehicle crash. The department’s mobile fire safety house provided children and adults a life lesson in how to evacuate a burning building quickly and safely.
The Home Depot hosts the event each year at the beginning of October which is recognized nationally as Fire Prevention Month. This year’s theme is “Practice Your Escape Plan!”
In a poll conducted by the National Fire Prevention Association, a majority of Americans have a fire escape plan, but most haven't practiced it. From October 7-13, National Fire Prevention Week, fire safety advocates will be spreading the word that when it comes to escape plans, practice is the key. Members of the Palm Bay Police Department also participated in fingerprinting and providing instruction in proper child safety seat installation.
