Members of the Palm Bay Police Department’s Neighborhood Policing Unit received an award from local residents in appreciation for what the residents say is, “hard work and dedication to their community.” The award was presented to the officers at a recent meeting of the Lockmar Estates Homeowners Association which also included the Greater Palm Bay Senior Center. Sgt. Mario Augello and four of his officers accepted the award with appreciation for the citizen involvement in helping make a difference in the community.
The Neighborhood Policing Unit was created in an effort to reduce crime through regular, non-confrontational contact with the citizens. The unit is comprised of six officers and a sergeant. The unit works with homeowners associations, civic groups, schools, daycare centers and local businesses to develop proactive crime prevention strategies to improve the quality of life in the community. “It’s always nice to receive positive recognition,” said Sgt. Mario Augello. “We could not be successful without the efforts of the citizens that we serve. This is all about a team and community effort.”
In the Lockmar Estates community, the Neighborhood Policing Unit has seen improvements over the last several years through the reduction of residential burglaries, reduced drug related activities, and enhanced focus on code enforcement issues, traffic enforcement and overall crime prevention.
