team recommends department accreditation
Posted: 08/17/07
A team of assessors is giving high marks to the Palm Bay Police Department for being in compliance with some of the toughest standards in law enforcement and will recommend the agency for accreditation through the Commission for Florida Law Enforcement Accreditation, Inc. The three member team spent the last three days pouring over department policies and procedures, interviewing personnel, and evaluating the overall workings of the agency to determine if it met the high standards for accreditation. “Nothing in our assessment showed any area of non-compliance,” said Sgt. Johnny Greenwood of the Putnam County Sheriff’s Office serving as the assessment team leader. “It is my intent to recommend 100% for accreditation. There’s no reason not to.”
The recommendation means the Palm Bay Police Department is in compliance with 256 standards set by the commission governing everything from the handling of property and evidence to internal affairs, training and recruitment, use of force, specials operations and other critical areas. “We found that the Department is well thought of in the community and that the employees are both enthusiastic and professional,” said assessor Lt. Steven Harrelson of the Leon County Sheriff’s Office.
The assessment team was also impressed with the volunteer programs which include over 100 non-paid personnel and victim services. “The commitment to victim services was impressive,” said assessor Ana Guerra of the Key Biscayne Police Department.
“This was a benchmark we needed to achieve,” said Chief Bill Berger. “Accreditation is an important measure of professional standards that the citizens can rely on in our mission to serve and protect.
