Over the past several years, Information and Innovation has been improving the way the city offices connect to its network through the use of fiber optics.

Using fiber optics is important in order to maintain reliable communication back to our main network at City Hall. After the 2004 Hurricanes, it became clear keeping connectivity with our outlying locations was essential in order to provide the best possible services to our citizens. After the storms, the City was at the mercy of the phone companies to restore our communications to our outlying offices. As such, when our citizens need recovery assistance we need to be operational and ready to assist during and after the storm passes. During the storm keeping communications alive is also very important to the Emergency Operations Center which was the first location to receive the fiber optics connection.
