Welcome to my first posting on the new city manager's blog

 On September 20th I had the pleasure, and honor, of swearing in Steve Abraira as the City’s new Fire Chief. Chief Abraira comes to the City of Palm Bay via the City of Miami where he rose to the rank of Assistant fire Chief and the City of Dallas, Texas where he served as Fire Chief for 5 years. I am looking forward to working with Chief Abraira over the coming years as he continues in the tradition of building a strong Fire Department for the citizens of Palm Bay.
When I swore in Chief Abraira, I deviated from the traditional oath of office and selected the Athenian Oath to be administered. The Athenian Oath was recited by the men of ancient Athens reaching the age of 17.
The Athenian Oath
We will never bring disgrace on this our City by an act of dishonesty or cowardice.
We will fight for the ideals and Sacred Things of the City both alone and with many.
We will revere and obey the City's laws, and will do our best to incite a like reverence and respect in those above us who are prone to annul them or set them at naught.
We will strive increasingly to quicken the public's sense of civic duty.
Thus in all these ways we will transmit this City, not only not less, but greater and more beautiful than it was transmitted to us.

The democratic ideals of the oath have transcended the generations of time and have migrated to all ends of civilization. I strongly encourage you to subscribe to the tenants of Athenian Oath and to share it with your friends and neighbors.
It is with this oath in mind that I have started this blog. Through this blog I intend to keep you informed of many of the current issues facing the administration of the City of Palm Bay. Together we will make Palm Bay greater and more beautiful then it was transmitted to us.
