City of palm bay employees meet united way need
Posted: 02/26/08
We all recognize that in tight budget times often the first groups to see diminished funding are the not-for-profit agencies, like the United Way of Brevard County. That is why, when Sheriff Jack Parker approached the City last fall and challenged the employees of Palm Bay to increase our commitment from $8,200 to $10,000 I was confident that that could be accomplished. In fact, I was so sure of our employee’s commitment to this community, that I told Sheriff Parker that we would strive for a 50% increase to $12,500.
In order to meet this challenge, I enlisted (actually drafted), Brad Johnson, a management analyst in the Utilities Department, to serve as our 2007-2008 campaign chair. Brad worked extremely hard at this task and, aided by the various departmental chairs, was able to raise over $19,000 for the United Way. At over a 130% increase, the City of Palm Bay was the largest expansion of an employer campaign in Brevard County.
At the City Council meeting of February 21, 2008, Sheriff Parker recognized the efforts of Brad Johnson and acknowledged the accomplishments of all city employees in supporting the United Way. I would like to join with Sheriff Parker in those accolades. I am extremely proud of the commitment of our employees, both on and off the job, to the community here in Palm Bay and the entire Brevard County.
