Palm Bay Historical Timeline

The City in Review

1950 - 800 families lived in Palm Bay

1960 - 2,808 residents lived in the newly incorporated Palm Bay and worked at Soroban, Radiation and Documation

1961 -  First mail delivery to homes in Palm Bay

1963 US Highway #1 is completed.  Babcock Street doesn't’t exist and Palm Bay Road was only paved to Lipscomb Street

1966 -  First school, Palm Bay Elementary, was built

1967 -  Fire Station #1 is built on Palm Bay Road

1967 -  Palm Bay narrowly rejects vote to consolidate 9 South Brevard communities into a super-city

1970 7,176 residents and the city’s budget was $367,650

1973 -  The police department moves to Zaruba Center at Veteran’s Park

1974 - The city’s first bank and the Dutch Inn Motel (now Days Inn) are built

1980 -   18,560 residents of Palm Bay

1984 -  The first city library opens on Port Malabar Boulevard

1987 -  Palm Bay among the first 200 cities honored as a Bicentennial Community

1990 -   62,632 residents helped Palm Bay become the county’s largest city, surpassing Melbourne by approximately 3,000 residents

1992 -  Palm Bay Community Hospital opens

1996 -  Palm Bay selected as Olympic Torch City

1999 -  Palm Bay first city in Brevard to be named a Millennium Community

2000 79,413 residents, 64 square miles of incorporated area, 850 miles of roadways and almost 2000 miles of swales, ditches and canals

2004 - Hurricanes Charley, Frances and Jeanne impact the city with $13 million dollars in damage and debris clean up

2006 - 100,000 residents
