Update on Turkey Creek Sanctuary After Hurricane Irma
The Turkey Creek Sanctuary suffered extensive damage last month due to Hurricane Irma. Many trees were knocked down and snapped off from Irma’s sustained winds as well as a tornado that touched down in the immediate area surrounding the park. In addition to downed trees and high winds, the boardwalk also experienced significant structural damage due to severe flooding caused by the storm.
Because of the extensive damage, some of the sanctuary’s trails and the entire boardwalk remain closed for the sake of public safety as well as the process of cleaning up and removing storm debris and other materials. As areas are cleared, cleaned, and assessed for safety and structural integrity, trails will be re-opened whenever possible. Visitors are asked to please be mindful of signs indicating trails and areas of the sanctuary that are closed. Avoiding these areas insures the safety of visitors, as well as the safety of park staff and other employees assigned with the task of removing downed trees and other debris during the hurricane recovery process.
