PBUD Named Wastewater Collection System of the Year; Wastewater Facility Presented With Safety Award

PALM BAY, Florida –  Palm Bay Utilities Department’s commitment to the environment and workplace safety was recognized by the Florida Water Environment Association (FWEA) during its annual meeting held in Orlando on April 8, 2014.

Palm Bay Utilities Department was named Wastewater Collection System of the Year in the mid-size utility category (10,000 to 50,000 wastewater connections).  This award recognizes utilities for significant accomplishments and efforts to properly manage, operate, and maintain their wastewater collection system. The City’s wastewater collection system is comprised of over 250 miles of sanitary sewer gravity and force mains, 2,500 manholes, and 105 lift stations located throughout the City.  Palm Bay Utilities Department currently services 15,389 wastewater accounts or approximately 40,000 residents. In 2012, the department was also recognized with this award.

The utilities department was also awarded third place for its exemplary safety program in its respective class of domestic wastewater treatment plants. Criteria for this award was based on the plant’s safety program and time devoted to training and safety topics. First place in Class B was awarded to Three Oaks Wastewater Treatment Facility (Lee County Utilities, Ft. Myers, Florida), and second place was presented to Northeast Wastewater Treatment Facility (Davenport, Florida).

“We are honored to be recognized with these two awards from FWEA.  As a utility service provider to the community, effectively managing our operations and resources as safely as possible is critical,” said Dan Roberts, P.E., utilities director. “We are continuously working to make our utility more efficient and effective, and I am thankful for the continuous improvement efforts of each utilities employee.
