"This is a great opportunity for us to connect with the community," said Chief Mark Renkens.  "We want people to know who we are, and what we are about.  The most effective way we can do our jobs is through connecting with our community so we can work together to create and maintain our safe neighborhoods."

Police Memorial Day is part of a national event known as National Peace Officers Memorial Week.  In 1962 President John F. Kennedy signed a proclamation which designated every May 15th as Peace Officers Memorial Day and the week in which that date falls as Police Week.  Each year tens of thousands of law enforcement officers from around the world converge on Washington, DC to participate in a number of planned events which honor those that have died in the line of duty.
