GIS can be used in many different situations. Below are a few examples of how GIS provides services for the City of Palm Bay:
GIS Support during Mother’s Day Fires GIS staff were deployed to the EOC during the Mother’s Day Fires, May 11 – 19th, 2008 to provide mapping to fire responders. Worked with the Division of Forestry to map fire boundaries from data collected by field crews with GPS and helicopter flights. GIS was also used to track the homes destroyed/damaged by the fires.
GIS Support for Tropical Storm Fay GIS staff deployed to EOC during Tropical Storm Fay, August 18 – 22nd, 2008. Mapped flooded areas as reported by citizens and staff. Created a grid of the flooded areas for building inspections and then mapped flood damaged homes.
4, 6, & 8 Minute Response Zones for Fire Stations For each fire station, used GIS to calculate the area of response within 4, 6, & 8 minute zones. Zone perimeters were field tested and the test drive times were within seconds of the predicted
times calculated in GIS.
Utilities Water/Sewer Availability Map
This map is updated regularly to show which areas of Palm Bay have City water and/or sewer
services available. The division can provide a large printed map for $10/each.
2009 City Street Map Annually the GIS Division creates a large city street map with a full street listing. This year’s map has larger labeling and includes some streets in our surrounding areas. Contact the Enterprise GIS Division for a copy of this map. The maps are available to the public at $10 each.
City Map Book The Street Map Book was completed in August 2008 and is available as a pdf. It at a scale of 1:7,700 and is 156 pages. The map book contains all of our new streets and improved data for parks, golf courses, canals, commercial buildings and water bodies. Contact the Enterprise GIS Division for a copy of the map book.
